For over 25 years, Scott L. Bruce, M.S., ATC, has worked with athletes at all levels of competition from youth sports to elite Olympic-level athletes. Through his experience, he has learned that concussive injuries are among the most debilitating to an athlete; and, as such, he has become impassioned by the concussion prevention initiative. His work with concussions began as an athletic trainer in college and now includes concussion research. His current research project examines the effects sub-concussive blows to the head have on college-age football players. As concussion treatment has evolved, research has since grown. In fact, there has been more concussion treatment research and articles in the last 10 years than in the last 40 years altogether.
Mr. Bruce will explain the concussion prevention initiative implemented in athletic programs throughout the country since the 1990s. This initiative was also executed during his tenure as the football assistant athletic trainer at the University of Miami. His time there was a career highlight, when the University of Miami won the Rose Bowl and the Bowl Championship Series National Championship in 2001. Mr. Bruce currently serves as an instructor and recruiter for the Graduate Athletic Training Program (GATP) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is presently pursuing his doctorate of education degree and is a member of many national, regional, and state professional organizations.
